Summary of Case:

Wrongly convicted in January 2007 of four counts of risk of injury to a minor. She faced up to 40 years in prison. Julie Amero was a substitute teacher in a 7th grade class when pornographic pop-ups began appearing on the screen of the classroom computer. Amero tried to stop the pop-ups but they continued. She covered the screen, but several students still saw some of the pop-ups. Amero claimed they just started, but the prosecution contended she was looking at porn sites, which she denied. After her conviction by a jury, computer experts around the world became aware of her case, and after analysis of the computer by the Connecticut State Patrol, which wasn't done before her trial, the State Patrol determined the pop-ups were caused by malicious spyware that infected the computer before Amero ever had access to the computer. After multiple delays of Amero's sentencing, the trial judge overturned her conviction on June 6, 2007, based on the new evidence that the jury relied on false testimony. The felony pornography charges were dismissed on November 21, 2008.
