Summary of Case:

"Glen Assoun was wrongly convicted in 1999 of the murder of 28-year-old Brenda Way in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1995. Way was found in parking lot on November 12, 1995, with her throat slashed and she suffered multiple stab wounds. Assoun was arrested almost three years later. Assoun's alibi defense was he was with his girlfriend on the night of Way's murder. He also challenged the contradictory testimony of prosecution witnesses, some of whom were criminals with suspect motives. After his conviction by a jury he was sentenced to life in prison. Assoun's conviction was affirmed by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in 2006. Assoun was released on bail in 2014 after a reinvestigation of his case convinced prosecutors that his conviction may have been a miscarriage of justice. Assoun was acquitted on March 1, 2019 after a retrial in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, during which the prosecution presented no evidence against Assoun."
