Summary of Case:

"Dan L. Bright was wrongly convicted in 1995 of killing a New Orleans man on Super Bowl Sunday and sentenced to death. The strongest evidence against Dan was the testimony of a witness who admitted that he had been drinking for 12 hours prior to the murder and was a convicted felon on parole. On his direct appeal the LA Sup. Ct. vacated his death penalty, and he was resentenced to life in prison. The actual killer's name was learned after a federal judge ordered the FBI to provide an unredacted copy of a report for an in camera review in response to a Freedom of Information request. The Louisiana Supreme Court subsequently vacated Dan Bright's conviction and he was released on June 14, 2004, after nine years of wrongful imprisonment. The State of Louisiana awarded Dan Bright $208,000 compensation. He also received $77,000 in the settlement of a federal civil rights lawsuit."
