Summary of Case:

"Huwe Burton was wrongly convicted in 1991 of second-degree murder and a weapons charge in the stabbing death of his mother, Keziah Burton, in Bronx County, New York in 1989. Burton was 16 at the time of his mother's death, and his prosecution as an adult was based on his confession. After his conviction Huwe Burton was sentenced to 15 to life imprisonment. Burton was released on parole in 2009. After a post-conviction investigation, the Bronx County DA acknowledged Burton's confession was "not trustworthy" due to "flawed interrogation procedures" by NYPD investigators, and in 2019 filed a motion to reverse is conviction and dismiss the charges, which was granted. Burton filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in October 2020 against the NYPD and officers involved in this case. In June 2021 Burton settled the lawsuit for $11 million. After the settlement was announced, a spokesman for the New York City Law Department told reporters that to obtain Burton’s confession the NYPD officers used “normal methods” at the time, but that "many of those investigative procedures are no longer used by the NYPD.""
