Wrongly convicted of sexual assault. His conviction was reversed after 3 years of wrongful imprisonment when the alleged victim recanted and admitted she made-up the accusation. Hurley's lawyer, public defender Tom Earl, was disbarred for life by the WA Supreme Court in May 2004 for a multitude of actions, including charging people assigned to be represented by him at public expense.
