Summary of Case:

"Larry Mayes and James Hill were codefendants wrongly convicted of rape and robbery in Hammond, Indiana. Mayes was sentenced to 80 years in prison. Mayes served 2-1/2 years pre-trial and 18-1/2 years of sentence before being exonerated by DNA test of physical evidence excluded Larry Mayes as the attacker. After his 2001 release, Mayes filed a $19 million federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Hammond, Indiana and its police department. On August 22, 2006, a jury awarded him $9 million dollars and the defendant's appealed. In September 2008 Mayes agreed to $4.5 million in exchange for ending the city's appeal."
