Summary of Case:

"George Messenger and his wife Kathryn Messenger were co-defendants. The Messenger's were wrongly convicted in January 1951 of obtaining money under false pretenses by a jury and sentenced to 7 years in prison. Both were freed in June 1951 on a writ of habeas corpus based on new evidence that no crime occurred because it violated their constitutional rights to be imprisoned for allegedly owing a debt. No compensation was paid for their five months of wrongful imprisonment, and the couples children were made permanent wards of the state during their imprisonment."
