Summary of Case:

"Basdeo Panday was wrongly convicted in 2006 of failing to disclose a foreign bank account in London. Panday, Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister from 1995-2001, was sentenced to two years in prison. Panday spent one night in jail before he was released on bond pending the outcome of his appeal. On March 20, 2007 Panday's conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeals, which ordered a new trial. The State appealed the ruling, and the Privy Council in London affirmed the grant of a new trial. Panday's retrial was held in June 2012, and Magistrate Marcia Murray acquitted Panday on the basis the alllegations against him had not been adequately investigated before the charges were filed against him. The prosecution appealed, but during a hearing on October 7, 2014 the Director of Public Prosecutions informed the court the appeal would be withdrawn."
