Summary of Case:

"Darrel Parker was wrongly convicted on June 2, 1956 for the strangulation murder of his wife on Decemeber 14, 1956. The primary evidence against Parker was his confession that he gave after being subjected to intense interrogation for 12 hours. Parker recanted the confession a day later. He was sentenced to life in prison. In 1969 the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Parker's conviction on the basis his confession was involuntary. Parker was released after 13 years of wrongful imprisonment. In 1988, Nebraska death row inmate Wesley Peery died of a heart attack. Peery's lawyers then revealed that he had confessed to the murder of Parker’s wife a number of times from 1978 to 1980. Parker filed an application for a pardon in 1988 based on the new evidence. Parker was granted a full pardon three years later in 1991. His pardon application was supported by Peery's lawyers. Parker filed a $500,000 claim in 2011 under Nebraska's wrongful conviction compensation law. In August 2012 Parker was awarded $500,000 in compensation by the State of Nebraska, and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning apologized for Parker's wrongful conviction."
