Summary of Case:

"Gregory Parsons was wrongly convicted in 1994 of murdering his mother, Catherine Carroll, and sentenced to life imprisonment. After 68 days imprisonment, Gregory Parsons was released on bail pending resolution of his appeal. A new trial was ordered by the Newfoundland Court of Appeals in 1996. Prior to the retrial, parsons was excluded as his mother's assailant by DNA testing that excluded him as the killer and the Newfoundland Sup Ct. entered a verdict of acquittal in November 1998. In March 2002 he was awarded CAN$650,000 in financial compensation by the government of Newfoundland. In November 2002, Parsons' childhood friend. Brian Doyle pled guilty to the second-degree murder of Parsons mother. In September 2005 Parsons was awarded an additional $650,000 in compensation by the government of Newfoundland - for a total of $1,300,000 (Canadian). The Lamer Inquiry was established in 2003 to look into the wrongful convictions in Newfoundland of Parson, Ronald Dalton and Randy Druken. The Inquiry Report was issued in 2006."
