Summary of Case:

John Lyon McCloy’s confession was the basis of his 1982 conviction of being involved in a 1980 Birmingham, England robbery during which a security guard was killed. McCloy protested that he was innocent and he had been forced into falsely confessing. His sentence was reduced to 12 years in 1984, and he was released after serving his sentence. On May 15, 2007, England’s Court of Criminal Appeal quashed McCloy’s conviction on the basis that his confession was false, and he had made it after being tortured by a notorious Birmingham police squad that was disbanded in disgrace in 1989.
