of Case:

Wrongly convicted in 1992 of abusing his two young daughters during his previous marriage, based on the testimony of the girls. Robert Doyle was sentenced to two 10-year prison sentences, for a total of 20 years. He was allowed to remain free on bail pending the outcome of his direct appeal. After his appeal by Alabama's state courts he began serving his sentence in December 1997. His lawyer then learned that the prosecutor had failed to disclose exculpatory statements by the victims. Based on the new evidence of Doyle's innocence, his conviction was overturned in 1999. In January 2000 the Court of Appeals affirmed Doyle's grant of a new trial, and he was released on July 7, 2000 after 2 years and 212 days of incarceration. Doyle filed a claim under Alabama's wrongful conviction compensation statute in January 2002. Doyle died in 2007. In December 2008 he was posthumously awarded awarded $129,000, that was to go to his widow Donna Doyle. |
