"About the case of Maryann Acker who was convicted in 1982 in Hawaii of committing a murder actually committed by her boyfriend. The State's only witness was her boyfriend, who testified she shot the man and that he wasn't promised anything in exchange for his testimony. However, after Acker was convicted and sentenced to life in prison the charges were dismissed against her boyfriend. 18 years later one of the jurors, Linda Spalding who was dismissedon the last day of testimony, came across the journals she kept during the case and had doubts about Acker's guilt. She began researching the case to write a book, and a lawyer she talked into looking into the case discovered that Acker's boyfriend had been promised immunity from prosecution for the crime in exchange for his testimony. When interviewed by Spalding he admitted he shot the man and lied at her trial. Based on the new evidence Acker filed a writ of habeas corpus, and in 2005 the Hawaiian Supreme Court overturned Acker's conviction." |
