Summary of Case:

"Ahmed Adeeb was wrongly convicted of conspiring to murder former Maldives President Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Adeeb was a confidant of Gayoom, whose speedboat exploded in 2015, injuring Gayoom's wife. After his conviction in the Criminal Court Adeeb was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Adeeb appealed. An investigation by the U.S.' Federal Bureau of Investigation found no evidence of explosives on the boat. On May 20, 2019 Maldives' High Court annulled Adeeb's conviction on the basis of insufficient evidence of his guilt, and ordered a new investigation of the assassination attempt on Gayoom. Adeeb remained in custody serving an 18 year sentence for a separate conviction of public corruption."
