Summary of Case:

"Aftab Ahmed was wrongly convicted on November 2, 2015 of threatening on April 21, 2015 to behead parliamentary candidate David Robinson-Young in Newcastle, England. Ahmed made the verbal threat to kill the 62-year-old Robinson-Young during a telephone conversation after Ahmed had received a UK Independence Party election leaflet at his home in the mail. Robinson-Young's phone number was on the flyer. After his conviction in the Newcastle Magistrates' Court, Ahmed was sentenced on November 4, 2015 to 20 days in jail, 12 months probation, 100 hours of unpaid community service, and ordered to pay £1,660 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge. Ahmed appealed. On May 6, 2016 a three-judge panel in the Newcastle Crown Court allowed Ahmed's appeal and quashed his conviction on the basis the prosecution failed to introduce evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he definitely intended to carry through on his threat to behead Robinson-Young. The Court ruled about Ahmed's threat, "“It may have been a throw away, angry line issued by him during a heated conversation, just before hanging up.”"
