Summary of Case:

"Timothy L. Allbery was wrongly convicted in 1994 of writing bad checks while he was an airman at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Allbery was convicted by a court-martial of writing 21 bad checks totaling $2,500 to the Ramstein Enlisted Club in exchange for rolls of quarters that he used to play slot machines in the club's game room. He was sentenced to two months in jail, a bad-conduct discharge from the Air Force, and reduction to the lowest pay grade. After Allbery's conviction and sentence were upheld by the military's Criminal Appeal Court, he appealed to the military's highest appeals court, In August 1996 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces reversed Timothy Allbery's conviction, ruling that his conduct wasn't criminal based on an edict issued by Queen Anne in 1710 that the nobility could no longer confiscate a person's property as payment for a large gambling debt."
