"Gonçalo Amaral was wrongly convicted of libel for alleging in a book that the British parents of Madeleine McCann were involved in their daughter’s disappearance in Portugal. McCann's disappearance was a cause celebre in England and Portugal. Amaral was ordered to pay Gerry McCann and Kate McCAnn €500,000 (£395,000) in compensation. In April 2016 an appeals court overturned Amaral's conviction."
