Summary of Case:

"Roland Glen Anderson was wrongly convicted in April 1997 of burglary in the attempted kidnapping and shooting of Dorothy Brister in 1992 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. Roland Anderson remained free on bond until his appeal was denied in 1999, when he then began serving his sentence. Two years later Anderson met in prison Arthur Gray, who was Brister's boyfriend and who was with her the night she was shot. Gray saw the shooter, and he told Anderson it wasn't him. Gray executed an affidavit, and Anderson incorporated the new evidence in a federal writ of habeas corpus. In 2001 Anderson's conviction was vacated by a U.S. District Court Judge. The State appealed, and in December 2003 the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the judge's decision to vacate Anderson's conviction. Anderson was released on bond in 2004. In January 2007 the charges against Anderson were dismissed. The Hinds County prosecutor said that based on the evidence now available, Anderson would not have been prosecuted. Anderson was wrongly imprisoned for almost six years. At the time of his release Mississippi had no wrongful conviction compensation statute. After Mississippi passed a compensation statute that took effect on July 1, 2009, Anderson filed a claim. His claim was opposed by the State, but he was awarded $300,000 in 2010."
