Summary of Case:

"Father Peter Paul Antony was wrongly convicted in 2002 of abetting the suicide on Oct. 13, 2000 of Tarun Bagde, a minor student at the St Joseph English School in Anandapuram, India. Antony's conviction was based on the testimony of witnesses and a letter Bagde wrote before his suicide. Antony's conviction was affirmed in 2005 by the Sessions Court. In July 2014 the Bombay High Court vacated Father Peter Paul Antony 's conviction in ruling: "There is absolutely no evidence to establish that on the day of the incident or immediately prior to the deceased committing suicide, the applicant had instigated or abetted the deceased to commit the same. In that view of the matter, applicant cannot be attributed the requisite 'mens rea' so as to hold him guilty as abettor.""
