Summary
of Case:
|
"Co-defendant of Isauro Sanchez, Ignacio Varela and Joaquin Varela. Along with his three codefendants he was convicted in 1982 of a quadruple murder and sentenced to life in prison. The defendants were Hispanics who didn't speak English. Their convictions were affirmed on direct appeal. An Illinois State Police investigation that discovered three witnesses who did not testify at the trial and confirmed that the actual killers had fled to Mexico, one of whom admitted his guilt. Based on the new evidence Illinois Governor James Thompson commutted the sentences of the four defendants to time served and they were released. In 1991 Gov. Thompson granted a full pardon to the four men conditioned on their agreement not to sue Illinois for false imprisonment." |
