Summary of Case:

"Anneli Auer was wrongly convicted twice of murder in the death of her husband Jukka Lahti on December 1, 2006 in the couple's home in Pori, Finland. She was first convicted in 2010 in the district court. An appeals court overturned her conviction in 2011, and Finland's Supreme Court ordered a new trial based on new evidence. After her retrial she was convicted in the district court on December 12, 2013. Her conviction was overturned on appeal, and the State appealed. On December 18, 2015 Finland's Supreme Court refused review of Anneli Auer's acquittal by the court of appeals. On September 8, 2016 Finland's State Treasury awarded Auer total compensation of €545,800 (Euros) (US$614,346). The award was comprised of 57,000 euros (US$64,159) for loss of earnings, and 488,800 euros (US$550,187) for 611 days of wrongful imprisonment compensated at 800 euros per day. It was the largest wrongful imprisonment award in Finish history. On January 19, 2018 the sourthwest Finland District Court denied Auer's claim for additional compensation of 2.5 million euros (US$3,059,235). Instead the court awarded her an additional 22,000 euros ($US26,921) for losses incurred during probation and the loss of prison vacation as well as additional compensation for time spent in a police prison. However, the judge ordered Auer to pay the State 17,300 euros (US$21,170) for court expenses. She she was awarded an additional 4,700 euros (US$5,751). (The currency exchange rates were US$1 to .0.817198 euro on 1-19-18, and US$1 0.888424 euro on 9-8-16)"
