Summary of Case:

"Andrew Auernheimer was wrongly convicted in federal court in Newark, New Jersey in 2012 of charges related to hacking into AT&T's website and obtaining about 120,000 email addresses. Auernheimer was sentenced to 41 months in prison. On April 11, 2014 the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Third District vacated Auernheimer's conviction on the basis he had been tried in the wrong federal judicial district, because all of his alleged crimes occurred in Arkansas, not New Jersey. Auernheimer was released from federal prison hours after the court's ruling after more than 3 years and 2 months in custody from the time of his arrest in 2011. On May 20, 2014 Auernheimer sent a letter to Susan D. Wigenton, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman, Assistant US Attorney Zach Intrater, and FBI Special Agent Christian Schorle, demanding 28,296 Bitcoins in restitution for their actions that Auernheimer claims caused his false arrest and imprisonment. Auernheimer arrived at his restitution amount by asserting he was owed 1 Bitcoin for every hour of the 1,179 days he was in custody from his arrest on January 18, 2011, until his release on April 11, 2014."
