Summary of Case:

"Cees B. was wrongly convicted in 2001 of raping and murdering, Nienke Kleiss, an 11-year-old girl in June 2000. Cees B. was arrested for the crime because he was seen near the scene of the crime and he fit the profile of being a paedophile, He confessed to the murder and then retracted the confession, claiming he had been pressured into falsely confessing. In the summer of 2004 another man, Wik H. was arrested for an attempted sexual assault and he admitted to the murder of Nienke. DNA left by the attacker was tested and it matched Wik H.'s DNA. Cees B. was exonerated and released in January 2005, after four years of wrongful imprisonment. He filed a claim for compensation, and was awarded the equivalent of US$706,000 in January 2006."
