Summary of Case:	"Satyam Babu was wrongly convicted on September 10, 2010 of the rape and murder of 19-year-old pharmacy student Ayesha Meera at a private women's hostel in Ibrahimpatanm, India on December 27, 2007. Babu was arrested in 2009 and prosecuted based on the allegation that he was given to sexual perversions. Police investigators concluded that Meera was rape was necrophilia because she was first murdered. After his conviction in the Mahila Court in Vijayawada, he was sentenced to life in prison. In April 2017 Babu's conviction was overturned on appeal by the High Court based on insufficient evidence and he was acquitted and released. The High Court ordered the Telangana State government to pay Babu Rs 1 lakh (US$1,549) compensation for the wrongful conviction. The High Court also ordered action against the police officers who investigated the case. On January 19, 2018 Hyderabad High Court Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan ordered a fresh probe into the rape and murder of Ayesha Meera and submit a report to the court by April 28, 2018. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), created by the state government in August 2017 will conduct the investigations under the supervision of the court.
