"Lucius Banda was wrongly convicted in September 2006 of of uttering a false document, and also of giving false information to a person employed in the public service. The false document was an allegedly forged Malawi School Certificate of Education that he used as evidence that he could read and write English. Lucius Banda was sentenced to 21 months hard labor in prison on the first count, and six months consecutively for the second count. In November 2006 the High Court in Blantyre quashed Banda's conviction and sentence on the basis of insufficient evidence and ordered his immediate release."
