Summary of Case:

"Thor Batista was wrongly convicted in June 2013 of vehicular homicide in the death of a cyclist he hit with his car in Rio de Janeiro.in 2012. Batista's conviction was based on an expert report that at the time of the car crash in 2012 he had been driving above the speed limit, although the police investigation found he had not been speeding. Batista was sentenced to pay $350,000 restitution to the family of the deceased man. After Batista's conviction a second expert examination of the crash scene evidence concluded he was driving within the limit. Batista appealed his conviction based on that new evidence. On February 19, 2015 Thor Batista's conviction was overturned by Rio de Janeiro’s Court of Justice in a 2-1 majority ruling. Batista is the son of former Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista."
