Summary of Case:

"Joseph R. Bedford was wrongly convicted in 2009 of disruption of public services in Summit County, Ohio in 2008. Bedford was indicted by a Summit County Grand Jury on May 29, 2008. After his conviction by a jury, Bedford was sentenced to one year in prison. Bedford was released from prison in May 2010. Bedford had filed an appeal, but it wasn't decided until after his release. On August 4, 2010 Ohio's Ninth District Court of Appeals vacated Bedford's conviction for disruption of public services on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Bedford filed a declaratory judgment proceeding as a prerequisite to file a compensation claim with the State of Ohio. On April 29, 2011 a Summit County Common Pleas Court judge determined that Bedford was a wrongfully imprisoned individual for his disruption of public services conviction. On May 23, 2011 Bedford filed a claim for compensation with the Ohio Court of Claims. On July 19, 2011 a settlement between Bedford and the State of Ohio was approved awarding him a total of $40,000, with Bedford receiving $37,505, and his lawyer to receive $2,495. At the same time as his disruption of a public services conviction, Bedford was also convicted of domestic violence, and that conviction was not overturned on appeal."
