Summary of Case:

"Jerry D. Bigelow was wrongly convicted of murder in Merced County, California. During Bigelow's trial he acted as his own attorney. After his conviction by a jury he was sentenced to death. In 1984 the California Supreme Court reversed Bigelow's conviction on the basis his trial was a sham because he was tried and given the death penalty without counsel. Jerry Bigelow was retried, and their was confusion about whether the jury found him guilty of murder in the way the juror form was filled out. Bigelow appealed. The California Court of Appeals ordered Bigelow's acquittal of murder on March 20, 1989. Bigelow was released from prison on July 6, 1989."
