Neal were wrongly convicted on March 25, 1960 of criminal trespass in Columbia, South Carolina on March 14, 1960 when they were arrested for trespassing when they refused to leave a restaurant where they were sitting in a booth. On June 22, 1964.the U.S. Supreme Court reversed Bouie and Neals' trespassing convictions on the basis their conduct was not enumerated as a crime at the time of their arrests, so "they have been deprived of liberty and property without due process of law in contravention of the Fourteenth Amendment."" |
