Summary of Case:

"Roy A. Brown was wrongly convicted of the May 23, 1991 murder and rape of a 16-year-old girl he had never met in a town he had never been in. Prior to his 1992 trial the prosecution acknowledged that testing of blood and saliva samples by a world-renowned forensic scientist excluded Roy Brown as the woman's attacker. Prior to his trial Brown offered to give a sample of his DNA to prove his innocence, but the prosecutor refused. Brown was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. In 2006 DNA tests were finally conducted and they excluded Brown. He was released from prison on January 23, 2007. The prosecution dropped the charges on March 5, 2007. From the time of his arrest Brown was wrongly imprisoned for 15-1/2 years. In May 2007 Brown filed a claim for $5 million compensation from New York State, and in November 2008 a judge ruled the state was liable, allowing the case to go to trial. On December 2008 the State agreed to settle Brown's claim for $2,600,000."
