Summary of Case:

"Timothy Brown was the co-defendant of Keith King. Both were wrongly convicted of murdering a Florida sheriff's deputy. Brown was 14 at the time of the crime. The conviction of Tim Brown, who reportedly has mental retardation, was based on his confession under interrogation to the crime. (Keith Brown also confessed to the crime.) Brown was sentenced to life in prison. In February 2002 a former jail deputy admitted killing the deputy. Brown's federal writ of habeas corpus was pending, and it was amended with the new evidence undermining the veracity of his conviction. In March 2003 a U.S. District Court judge vacated Brown's conviction on the ground that he did not intelligently waive his constitutional rights prior to confessing. When the prosecution declined to retry him and dismissed the charges, Brown was released from prison in May 2003 after spending nearly 12 years in prison."
