Summary of Case:

"Malcolm Jabbar Bryant was wrongly convicted in September 1999 of the stabbing murder of Toni Bullock during a robbery on November 20, 1998 in Baltimore, Maryland. Bryant's prosecution was based on his identification by Bullock's friend who was walking with her at the time of the assault. After Bryant's conviction he was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years. Post-conviction DNA testing in 2011 of nail clippings at the crime scene found partial DNA with a rare identifier that didn't match Bryant's DNA. With the support of the Baltimore State's Attorney Office's Conviction Integrity Unit, additional DNA testing ordered in 2015 of blood on Bullock's t-shirt (where she was stabbed) found a full DNA profile that matched the 2011 test, and excluded Bryant. Based on the new exclusionary evidence, the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office filed a motion to vacate Bryant's conviction and requested dismissal of the charges, which was granted on May 11, 2016 by a Baltimore Circuit Court judge. Lauren Lipscomb, division chief of the state's attorney's office's conviction integrity unit stated, “The only plausible explanation we have for the male DNA’s presence under the victim’s fingernails and in the area of the fatal wound on the victim’s t-shirt is that the DNA is in fact the killer’s DNA and does not match Malcolm Bryant. This in all probability means Mr. Bryant is not the murderer.”"
