Summary of Case:

"Edward Caley-Knowles was wrongly convicted in 1972 of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a fellow railway worker in Kendal, England. He offered a defense of self-defense, but the trial judge said this was no defence in law, and directed the jury to return a guilty verdict without retiring. Caley-Knowles was given a nine month prison sentence suspended for two months of good behavior. The Criminal Case Review Commission accepted Caley-Knowles case after the House of Lords ruled in 2005 in Regina v. Wang [2005] UKHL 9 (10 February 2005), "that there were no circumstances in which a judge was entitled to direct a jury to return a verdict of guilty." In June 2006 the Court of Criminal Appeals for England and Wales quashed Caley-Knowles' conviction as unsafe because the trial judge directed the jury to return a verdict of guilty."
