Summary of Case:	"In July 2019 Canada's federal government enacted legislation creating a process for a pardon ("record suspension") to be issued to people convicted of low-level drug possession offenses. The law was enacted in response to the legalization of marijuana (cannabis) possession and personal use in Canada, however, a pardon is available to anyone convicted of a generic low-level drug offense, not just marijuana. It is estimated that upwards of 250,000 marijuana related convictions alone are eligible for a pardon. After the first month of the program, 44 Canadians had been received a pardon issued by the Parole Board of Canada. The pardon effectively masks the criminal conviction so it doesn't appear in a criminal background check, the same as if it had been expunged or erased. The pardons can make it easier for a person to get a job and housing, and even to cross the border into the U.S."
