Summary of Case:

"Edward George Carter was wrongly convicted in 1975 of sexual assault and armed robbery in 1974 in Detroit, Michigan. After his conviction by a jury Edward Carter was sentenced to life in prison. A post-conviction investigation of Carter's case resulted in the discovery that his trial lawyer provided ineffective assistance of counsel for failing to request an analysis of fingerprints at the scene, failing to point out the semen collected was of a different blood type than Carter's semen, and failing to note a record establishing Carter was in police custody at the time of the crime. Based on that evidence Carter's conviction was vacated in 2010, the charges were dismissed, and he was released in 2010. On August 16, 2017 Carter was awarded compensation of $175,753 by the State of Michigan under the state wrongful imprisonment compensation statute enacted in 2017."
