Summary of Case: |
"Edwin Chandler Sr. was wrongly convicted of manslaughter and robbery in the September 1993 shooting death of a female gas station attendent in Louisville, Kentucky by a robber who stole $32. Edwin Chandler lived in the area and the area and he had a warrant out for his arrest on another charge when he was interrogated. He confessed, but later retracted that it was coerced by police threats and they coached him and provided details of the crime. The jury didn't believe Edwin Chandler's alibi was he was watching television with his girlfriend at the time of the crime. Chandler was released on parole in 2002 after 9 years incarceration from the time of his arrest in 1993. In 2004 the Kentucky Innocence Project became involved in Chandler's case. In Octobe 2008 a fingerprint lifted from a bottle of beer left on the gas station counter was reexamined. It didn't match Chandler, but it was matched through the FBI's fingerprint database to repeat offender Percy Phillips. On October 13, 2009 Chander's convictions were vacated with the Louisville police and prosecutor acknowledging he is innocent. The same day Phillips was indicted for the same crimes. Edwin Chandler filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Louisville that was settled for $8.5 million in October 2012." |
