Summary of Case:

"Deepak Chawla was wrongly convicted on December 15, 2007 of stealing electricity for his softy-making plant in the Rithala area in outer Delhi in 2005. Chawla rented space in the building where the low voltage power cable was run from the power pole. Chawla was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.3 crore. Chawla's conviction was overturned on appeal by the Delhi High Court on the basis there was insufficient evidence presented at trial that Chawla was guilty, because the trial court merely presumed he was the power user without any verification.
