Summary of Case:

"Roudi Chikho was wrongly convicted in 2013 of convicted of travelling on false documents when he was arrested at Gatwick Airport in London, England in December 2012. Chikho, a Kurd, flew into England using a fake Canadian passport after he fled Syria because he was exposed as having secretly filmed atrocities carried out by the government of Bashar al-Assad and published his footage via al-Jazeera, YouTube and other media outlets. Chikho told the British authorities that he was seeking asylum. Chikho was advised by his lawyer to pled guilty, and he was sentenced to a year in prison and his £2,619 in savings seized at the time of his arrest was forfeited. Chikho applied for refuge status that was granted two months into his sentence, of which he served six months before he was released. The Criminal Cases Review Commission accepted Chikho's case, and referred his case to the Court of Appeals for England and Wales. On October 18, 2016 the Court of Appeals quashed Chikho's conviction on the basis that under the 1951 refugee convention it was lawful for him to enter the U.K. as an asylum seeker fleeing for his life and there was no other way for him to travel other than using a fake passport."
