Summary of Case: |
"Charles F. Barr, Richard M. Counts, David Carter, Milton D. Greene and Johnny Clark were codefendants wrongly convicted in 1960 of trespassing and breach of the peace when they continued to peacefully and quietly sit at the lunch counter of the Taylor Street Pharmacy in Columbia, South Carolina waiting to be served after they were asked to leave. They were each sentenced to serve 30 days in jail or pay a fine of $100. Their convictions were affirmed by the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1961. On June 22, 1964 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned their convictions for insufficient evidence they committed a breach of the peace and their criminal trespass convictions were also reversed." |
