Summary of Case: |
"Leslie Collier was wrongly convicted in 1995 of poisoning three bald eagles, which are federally protected as an endangered species. Leslie Collier, a farmer in southeast Missouri, had put out poisoned hamburger to kill coyotes that were killing his turkeys. Seven coyotes died, and the bald eagles died after eating the coyotes. Collier agreed to a plea agreement in late 1995 to avoid a possible prison sentence if convicted by a jury. Collier was sentenced to two years probation and fined $10,000 restitution. Collier filed a petition for a presidential pardon, which was granted in late November 2008." |
