Summary of Case: |
"Margaret Conway was wrongly convicted on November 23, 1882 of committing arson for setting fire to a building in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in 1882. After her conviction by a jury Conway was sentenced to three years in prison. Because of her apparent insanity she was transferred to the Worcester Lunatic Hospital on February 27, 1884. During a pardon board hearing evidence was presented that because of Conway's insanity she could be better cared for at home by her husband. Conway's insanity prevented her from having criminal intent. On July 31, 1884 Margaret Conway was granted a full pardon by Massachusetts Governor George D. Robinson based on the recommendation of the Pardon Committee." |
