Summary of Case:

"Thomas Crittenden was wrongly convicted in February 1884 of murdering Rom Uowby, a black porter on December 8, 1882. After his first trial ended with a hung jury, Thomas Crittenden was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to eight years in prison. His conviction was overturned by the Kentucky Court of Appeal based on the trial judge allowing hearsay testimony. Crittenden's motion for a change of venue to a different county was granted, and he was acquitted after a retrial."
