"Rennard 'Rennie' C. Davis was one of the Chicago Seven tried in federal court in Chicago, IL for allegedly violating the Anti-Riot Act of 1968. Rennard C. Davis, Abbie Hoffman, David T. Dellinger, Jerry C. Rubin, and Thomas E. Hayden were convicted on Feb 18, 1970 of inciting to riot. The other two were acquitted. The five convicted defendants were sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5,000. The five convicted defendants were sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5,000. The convictions of all five men were reversed by the federal 7th Circuit Ct of Appeals on Nov. 21, 1972, based in part on Judge Julius Hoffman's refusal to allow US Attorney General Ramsey Clark to testify on behalf of the defendant's, when he could have provided exculpatory testimony. The court ruled, "This court has held that where a witness is able to offer relevant, competent and material evidence as to any issue in the trial, the fact that he holds office and thereby enjoys prestige does not disqualify him as a witness, nor make his testimony prejudicial.""
