Summary of Case:

"Frederick Renee Daye was wrongly convicted on June 4, 1984 of two counts of rape, kidnapping, robbery, and unlawful taking of an automobile by the erroneous eyewitness ID of the victim and a bystander. Frederick Daye was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping, plus 14 years an 8 months for the rape and auto theft convictions, while his sentence for robbery was stayed. Daye was exonerated by DNA testing techniques unavailable at the time of his trial that excluuded him as the source of crime scene evidence. Daye's habeas corpus petition based on the new evidence was granted on September 26, 1994 and his convictions were vacated. Daye was released the next day, on September 27, 1994. In October 2001 Daye filed a claim with California's Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board. On March 22, 2002 he was awarded $386,000 in compensation by the California Claims Board for his 3,860 days of wrongful imprisonment (10 years and 260 days) from the day of his conviction to his release."
