Summary of Case:

"Four codefendants were wrongly convicted in 2003 of murder in the death of a woman in China's Jiangxi province in 2000. Their prosecutions were based on their confessions that were extracted by police torture during their interrogations. There was no other evidence linking them to the crime. The four were sentenced to death. In 2006, their sentences were reduced to a death sentence suspended for two years, which is typically commuted to life in prison. In 2015 the Jiangxi Provincial High Court accepted their appeal. On December 22, 2016 the High Court reversed the convictions of the four men and ordered their acquital. The court's ruling noted their confessions could have been coerced, and the forensic evidence was inconclusive, in stating: "This case lacks objective evidence.""
