Summary of Case:	"Dhal Singh Dewangan was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and five daughters in Chhattisgarh State, India on February 19, 2012. Dewangan's prosecution was based solely on circumstantial evidence, since there was no eyewitness or physical evidence linking him to the crimes. Dhal Dewangan was sentenced to death. Dewangan appealed. On September 23, 2016 India's Supreme Court by a majority 2-1 verdict quashed Dewangan's conviction and acquitted him on the basis the prosecution failed to introduce sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The Court ruled that the circumstantial evidence, based on which the trial court had convicted Dewangan, “did not form a complete chain of evidence. In our view, the circumstances mentioned do not form a complete chain of evidence as not to leave any reasonable ground for the conclusion consistent with the innocence of the appellant, nor do the circumstances exclude every possible hypothesis except the guilt of the accused. ... We allow these appeals, set aside the judgments of conviction and sentence recorded by the Courts below against the appellant and acquit him of all the charges levelled against him. The appellant be set at liberty immediately unless his custody is required in any other case.""
