Summary of Case:	"Nine medics in Bahrain's capital of Manama were wrongly convicted in September 2011 of gathering illegally and plotting to overthrow the government related to protests in February and March 2011, when in fact they were providing medical assistance to injured protesters. The medics, some of whome were doctors, worked at Manama's Salmaniya Medical complex. Their convictions were in part obtained on the basis of confessions, that the medics claimed were coerced by the use of torture. The nine were sentenced to between 5 and 15 years in prison, but they were released on bail after their convictions pending the outcome of their appeals..On June 14, 2012 Bahrain's appeals court acquitted the nine medics, in part by excluding the evidence of their disputed confessions. Nine other medics who were convicted had their convictions affirmed, although fivew were sentenced to less than one year in prison and released for time served, while four others were ordered taken back into custody to serve longer sentences."
