Summary of Case:

"Costas Kenteris, Katerina Thanou, and Christos Tzekos were wrongly convicted on May 10, 2011 of perjury for allegedly lying about faking a motorcycle crash on August 12, 2004 after Kenteris and Thanou missed a doping test on the eve of the 2004 Athens Olympic games. Tzekos was their coach. Seven state hospital doctors who treated the runners and two people who said they witnessed the accident were also convicted of perjury and given suspended sentences of between 6 and 15 months. Kenteris won the gold medal in the 200 meters at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Thanou, his training partner, was the silver medalist in the 100 meters at Sydney. During their trial Kenteris and Thanou presented evidence that the motorcycle crash happened after the two had missed a scheduled drug test, and they introduced x-rays and blood records in support that they were treated for injuries. On September 6, 2011 a Greek appeals court acquitted all 12 co-defendants of perjury, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to determine beyond reasonable doubt that the crash had not taken place, and hence that any of the 12 defendants had not told the truth. The trial that began on January 21, 2011, but with delays there wasn't a verdict until May 10, 2011."
