Summary of Case:

"Jermaine Dollard was wrongly convicted in 2012 of drug charges related to his alleged supplying of cocaine to a Kent County distribution ring. Dollard's prosecution was based on a substance allegedly seized from him on June 13, 2012 that was asserted to be cocaine by the Deleware Controlled Substances Lab in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). After his conviction, in 2013 Dollard was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Dollard filed a motion for a new trial after it was publicly reported that investigators discovered more than 50 pieces of drug evidence had been tampered with at the OCME between 2010 and 2014, which resulted in the Delaware State Police closing the controlled substances lab in February, 2014 and the Delaware Legislature eliminating the OCME. The judge ordered the substance to be retested, and on January 7, 2015 the tests came back negative for cocaine -- and it was in fact powdered sugar. Based on the new evidence that Dollard's conviction was based on false expert testimony and their was no evidence he was in possession of a controlled substance, his conviction was reversed, the charges dismissed, and he was released after almost 3 years in custody."
