Summary of Case:

"Biologist Ernesto Bustamante Donayre was convicted in April 2010 of defamation — a criminal offence in Peru — for publicly criticizing a report published by a fellow biologist -- Antonietta Ornella Gutiérrez Rosati -- that claimed genetically modified maize was found in plots 120 miles north of Lima. Donayre was fined 5,000 soles (US$1,800) and his travel was restricted. In December 2010 Donayre's conviction was overturned on appeal.
